The Adoption Process: What to Expect

At the Humane Society of Central Arizona, we ask detailed questions of prospective adopters for two important reasons:

• To help ensure our animals find safe, loving, long-term homes
• To create the best possible match between pets and their future families

What questions will I be asked?

All adopters are required to complete an adoption application. This includes questions about your contact information, housing situation, number of people and pets in your home, activity level, and what you’re looking for in a new companion—just to name a few.

Why do we ask so many questions?

Many pets end up in shelters due to circumstances that could have been prevented. Common reasons include housing restrictions, moving, financial challenges, lack of time, and allergies.

In some cases, it simply comes down to a mismatch between the pet and the home. For example:
• A high-energy dog in a home without time for daily exercise
• A shy or undersocialized kitten placed with very young, active children
• A pet who prefers to be the only animal in a home with other pets

Our goal is to prevent these situations before they happen. By learning more about you and your household, we can help guide you toward a pet that truly fits your lifestyle—setting both you and your new companion up for success.
