What Can I Expect When Visiting the Shelter? How Can I Be Prepared?
Bringing a new pet into your life is a long-term commitment, so taking your time to find the right match is important. Before visiting, think about what type of pet would best fit your lifestyle—large or small, young or senior, mellow or high-energy. It’s also important to consider the time, space, and financial commitment you’re ready to provide.
When you arrive at the shelter, you can let us know which animal you’re interested in meeting. You’re welcome to browse available dogs on our website ahead of time or look through our adoptable animal binder at the front desk.
Why a binder?
To help reduce stress and create a calmer environment, our main dog kennels are not open to the public.
Once you find a dog you’d like to meet, a staff member will bring them out for a one-on-one introduction. Our kennel staff are happy to answer your questions and help guide you—especially if you’re still deciding which dog might be the best fit for your home.
When you’ve found your match, you’ll complete an adoption application. Our staff will review it with you and may go over a few details to ensure the best possible fit.
If you already have a dog at home, we do require a meet-and-greet. If you live outside of Payson, we recommend bringing your dog with you during your visit to avoid making an extra trip.
If everything goes well, you can move forward with the adoption that same day! All of our animals are already spayed or neutered and ready to go home. If you’d prefer a little time to prepare, we can place a short hold on the animal until the next business day.
Final paperwork and payment are completed when you’re ready to take your new companion home. We accept cash and card payments; please note that we do not accept checks for adoptions.
